Denture Cream Side Effects

Denture cream side effects including serious neurological problems like neuropathy have been reported by denture wearers throughout the United States. Denture cream zinc poisoning is caused by the denture cream ingredient zinc being absorbed through the mucous membranes of the mouth. In 2008 researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center reported on patients using either Fixodent or Poligrip denture cream who had suffered from different neurologic problems including neuropathy. The denture creams they analyzed contained at least 17 mg of zinc per gram of cream. They estimated that with average amounts of denture cream used on a weekly basis patients would be exposed to at least 330 mg of zinc per day. The researchers conclude that given the high amount of zinc exposure it is reasonable to believe patients were ingesting zinc in amounts higher than the upper level daily intake of 40 mg that was established by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies (formerly National Academy of Sciences).

Denture Cream Neuropathy

Serious denture cream side effects include neurological problems. Peripheral neuropathy describes damage to the peripheral nerves which connect the spinal cord and transmits information to every part of the body. It typically affects the hands and feet causing weakness, numbness, tingling and pain. Impaired function and specific symptoms depend on the type of nerves that are damaged.
